Let the importance of your eternal state be much in view and deeply impressed upon your hearts. Look often into the blessed eternity that is before you. Be much and often in the contemplation of the heavenly world, and when your hearts are raised and warmed into admirings of the glory, then ask what little things are the sunshine or the storms of this lower world. You may then say, “Tell me not of crosses or disappointments here; but how I shall get to heaven! If I may but arrive there, it is of little moment what befalls me here.”
Do not allow yourselves what merely pleases self; opportunities are often only temptations. Accustom yourselves to wish for no more than God allows to you, and you shall find that God will never give less than will content you. He who, whatever happens, whatever his portion or condition may be, in every turn or change that comes, can find his heart still saying, “It is with me as it should be”; he whose heart says of every condition he is in, “it is well” – that man has obtained an important conquest over the world.
